As part of its mission to help families lead more independent lives, Bonim has been performing various home modifications for seniors. Projects include installation of grab bars for the shower, installation of outdoor ramps and railings. We are looking to create a list of volunteers who are able to help install these devices. Projects can be done during the week or on the weekend. If you’re interested in being put on a list for this program contact Genene.
Bonim Builders Bnai Mitzvah Project
Years from now, what will your children remember about their Bar/Bat mitzvah?
Is your child celebrating a bar/bat mitzvah and you’d like to work on a meaningful project together? Well, Bonim might be the answer for you! There are many local agencies who are in need of repairs, landscaping, painting, and who don’t have the funds to perform these tasks. There are also families in need in our community whose homes are in need of basic repairs and renovations. Bnai Mitzvah families can sponsor these projects and involve family and friends in the project. Please email Genene Kaye at genenek@ujannj.org for more information.
Repairing the World, One House At a Time
Through our mission, "Repairing the World, One House At a Time", Bonim Builders implements building and rehabilitation projects for low income families, the handicapped, and seniors in the northern New Jersey area. Bonim, which means builders in Hebrew, utilizes volunteers for hands-on projects to rehabilitate and refurbish homes and other facilities for those in need thus improving the quality of life for area residents both in the Jewish community as well as in the greater community.
Bonim Builders is an outreach program developed through UJA NNJ’s Synagogue Leadership Initiative. It was formed in 2002 by members of the Jewish community to create opportunities for synagogues and individuals to connect with the concept of Tikkun Olam, or repairing the world, a core value of Judaism. Bonim has a cadre of over 700 volunteers interested in making a difference in our community. The organization works on its own and in concert with other rebuilding agencies such as Rebuilding Together and Habitat for Humanity. Volunteers of all skills levels are welcome, even those with little or no experience are encouraged to participate! From a novice who has never picked up a hammer to an expert handyman, building opportunities offer something for everyone. Actvities include tasks such as painting, light carpentry, floor installation, window installation, and landscaping.
Building project are schedule September through June. Volunteers are notified via email when a project is scheduled. If you are interested in volunteering, please click here and complete the registration form so you can be added as a Bonim Builders volunteer!
