~ Abuse Hotline ~

  • ADV – ALTERNATIVES TO DOMESTIC VIOLENCE,
    a division of the Bergen County government exclusively devoted to domestic violence intervention, is seeking volunteers to answer their crisis hotlines.  Spanish or Korean speaking a plus. Confidentiality and the ability to be empathetic is a must.  Appropriate training provided.

  • PONY POWER @ THREE SISTERS FARM
    provides horseback riding therapy to children and adults with autism, cerebral palsy, multiple sclerosis, emotional disabilities, developmental delays, and multiple handicaps.  Volunteer activities range from grooming horses, cleaning saddles and tidying up the stable, to side walking riders or leading the horses.

  • P-U-R-R-S…N’ PUPS ANIMAL RESCUE TEAM
    an all volunteer organization based in Riverdale, dedicated to the rescue and adoption of unwanted animals.  Some of the opportunities available include providing a foster home, donating food and litter, help during adoption hours, donating old towels, sheets, blankets small bath rugs, etc.

  • RAMAPO-BERGEN ANIMAL REFUGE
    gives adoptable animals an open-ended stay in a warm, safe place until loving homes can be found.  Volunteer opportunities include working directly with the animals at the shelter, providing foster care, assisting with office activities.

Bergen County Toy Drive is a community-wide drive which begins collecting toys a month before Chanukah.  Gifts are distributed to numerous agencies throughout the New York Metropolitan area and in Israel.

~ Bonim – Builders for Bergen ~

  • CAMP ACORN
    Summer program for children and adults with disabilities. Volunteers needed to help campers with arts & crafts, games, snacks, etc.  Special activities include dances and field trips.   Location to be determined.

  • FRIENDSHIP CIRCLE

  • JEWISH ASSOCIATION FOR DEVELOPMENTAL DISABILITIES 
    J-ADD operates nine residential sites for people with developmental disabilities throughout Bergen County.  Volunteers are welcome to come and spend time with the residents either for one visit or as they see fit.  The homes also have a wish list for particular items they can use.  In the warm weather, donations of basketballs, items for yard games and lawn furniture are welcome.  Please call the J-ADD office for more information or to schedule a visit to any of the homes,

  • JEWISH COMMUNITY CENTER ON THE PALISADES

  • JEWISH EDUCATION FOR SPECIAL CHILDREN
    Housed in the Yeshiva of North Jersey, JESC seeks volunteers for Sunday mornings for at least one semester to work one-on-one with children with special needs.

  • SINAI SPECIAL NEEDS INSTITUTE

    Sharsheret is a national organization of cancer survivors dedicated to addressing the unique concerns of young Jewish women facing breast cancer.  Breast cancer survivors are welcome to become Sharsheret Links or general volunteers and share their experience with those newly diagnosed or facing the risk of breast cancer and to offer invaluable support to other young women.

    Baby G’mach, based in Passaic, accepts baby clothing in excellent condition up to size 2T.  Also accepts other baby items in good condition including high chairs, cribs, strollers, carriages, changing tables, diapers and formula.  Will pick up in NJ/NY area.  Items distributed to anyone in need  - no questions asked.

  • UMBRELLA CLOTHING COLLECTION
    Umbrella Clothing Collection will pick up clothing (not ripped or stained), linens, towels, drapes, soft toys, shoes and handbags (no appliances, books, furniture)  Proceeds go to the Committee for Strengthening Torah True Jewish Commitment – an offshoot of Chabad of Maplewood NJ.

~ Deliver Meals on Wheels ~

  • KOSHER MEALS ON WHEELS (KMOW) 
    Looking for drivers who can make a commitment either once a week or twice a month to drive the routes to elderly shut-ins and deliver daily hot meals or frozen meals.  These deliveries can be done during the day or  evening thus allowing full-time working people to volunteer.  All drivers must be at least 18 years of age and possess a valid NJ driver’s license.  Also looking for substitutes who can cover for drivers who cannot make it on a particular day.

  • COLLECTION
    Project Isaiah
    at the Jewish Center of Teaneck.  Every year on Kol Nidre night, congregants are encouraged to bring a bag of non-perishable food to the synagogue which is then distributed to Tomchei Shabbos, Center for Food Action, Bergen County Homeless Shelter, and Shelter Our Sisters.  Non-members are welcome to contribute.

  • SHEARIT HAPLATE
    A grass-roots organization based out of Teaneck will help pack and redistribute surplus food from events.  Please call at least 2 weeks in advance to alert the organization as to an upcoming event.  Volunteers needed to help repack and transport food to a holding area for pick-up and distribution.

  • CENTER FOR FOOD ACTION (CFA)
    CFA
    provides emergency food, advocacy, rent and utility assistance for those in need.  Volunteers are needed to sort and stock the pantries as well as other assistance.  CFA collects specific items for seasonal events such as personal men’s products for Father’s Day and luncheon items for kids for the summer such as water bottles, juice boxes, jelly, tuna, mayonnaise, etc. Contact the individual sites for details.

Numerous fundraising activities are available within the UJA Federation of Northern New Jersey campaign divisions. UJANNJ is united in its efforts to raise funds throughout Northern New Jersey through Major Gifts, Professional, Vanguard, Young Leadership, and Women’s Divisions. Volunteers reach out to their neighbors and colleagues to support the UJANNJ Annual Campaign.  They can get actively involved in various projects such as Super Sunday, synagogue activities and other community events.  UJANNJ aims to fulfill the Federation's mission to meet the needs of Jews at home, in Israel and around the world.

  • EVA’S VILLAGE
    Eva’s Kitchen and Sheltering Programs is a non-profit comprehensive social service agency.  Their mission is to feed the hungry, shelter the homeless, treat the addicted and provide medical care to the poor.
    Volunteers, both groups and individuals, are needed to serve meals.  The kitchen is open 365 days/year and serves lunch and dinner.

  • PALISADES EMERGENCY RESIDENCE CORPORATION
    The mission of this nonprofit, interfaith homeless shelter is to provide food and shelter to residents in need.  There are numerous volunteer opportunities that include preparing dinner, serving meals, staffing food pantry, organizing special events, contributing to the newsletter, teaching/tutoring, administrative assistance, and more.

  • Mitzvah Day
    You can participate in a carnival for children with cancer, help clean up the environment, or spend time with a nursing home resident who has no family in the area.  These are just some of the 40 ways you can make a difference on Mitzvah Day, which annually brings together over a thousand volunteers on a Sunday in November.  Choose from an extensive list of sites, or create your own project.

  • Mitzvah-thon
    Every year, on a Sunday in May, the Fair Lawn Jewish Community Council  organizes its annual Mitzvah-thon.  Similar to the UJA Federation of Northern NJ Mitzvah Day, this Mitzvah-thon includes visiting the elderly, making crafts for seniors and delivering them to their homes, and much more.   • SWIM-IN
    located in the JCC on the Palisades, is a free once-a-week recreational swimming program where people with Multiple Sclerosis have an opportunity for therapeutic exercise.  Volunteers socialize with the swimmers and assist them in the dressing room, as well as in the pool.  The social and caring aspects of this community service are most rewarding to swimmers and volunteers alike.

~ Safe House ~

  • SHELTER OUR SISTERS
    provides temporary housing for abused and battered women, along with a diversified continuum of services focused on the attainment of safety, empowerment, and self-sufficiency for each client.
    Suggested volunteer activities include:
    •   “Adopt-a-room” – Decorate a room in either the emergency crisis facility or one of the Transitional Houses.
    •   Assist with seasonal “house freshening” such as planting flowers, vegetables or shrubbery in the spring, or raking and maintaining outdoors in the fall. 
    •   Coordinate a collection of food, paper goods, cleaning supplies or other items on the SOS wish list.

  • CHORE SERVICE
    performs minor household indoor repairs that help to make homes safer and offers those in need more independence.  Volunteer handymen and handywomen go on service calls as part of a crew of one or two other volunteers and a driver.  Skills needed include those most homeowners need to maintain their homes.  Chore is sponsored by the Volunteer Center of Bergen County.

~ Shalom Baby ~

Shalom Baby is an outreach program of the Synagogue Leadership Initiative. Volunteers call new parents to arrange a visit in the new family’s home at which time they bring a welcome bag with gifts from the UJA Federation, local restaurants and business establishments, as well as other useful information about raising a Jewish baby in Northern New Jersey. Volunteers are required to attend a short Volunteer Training Session prior to making any home visits. In addition to the required training time, we ask volunteers to make a minimum of one phone call/visit per year, though more is welcome.

  • FEDERATION APARTMENTS
    Jewish Community Housing Corporation of North Jersey.  Federation Apartments is an independent living senior housing for low to moderate income tenants. Volunteers are welcome to spend a little time one on one, drive a tenant to appointments or do activities with a group.  Russian speaking a plus.

  • GALLEN ADULT DAY CARE - JEWISH HOME AT ROCKLEIGH
    The Gallen Adult Day Health Care Center provides care and services to the elderly living in the community who are experiencing frail health and/or dementia.  The program runs Monday thru Friday 8:30 am – 4:30 pm.
    Volunteers are needed for numerous tasks, including greeting and assisting clients at the door and helping to serve breakfast and/or lunch.  Volunteer entertainment such as dance troupes and musicians are also welcome.  Administrative help is also appreciated – great for high school students looking for community service hours.

  • GRAND-BUDDIES is a new program where volunteers “adopt” a grand-buddy and spend time one-on-one or in a buddy-group with residents of the Jewish Home at Rockleigh.

    Friendly visitation, telephone friends or computer tutoring are just some of the many different opportunities volunteers can do through these two Jewish Family Service agencies.  Homebound seniors in the community can use a friendly face every so often to brighten their day.  Drivers also needed to drive seniors to doctor’s appointments.

  • KAPLEN ADULT REACH CENTER
    is an award winning social adult day care program at the JCC on the Palisades.   Seniors with memory impairment or a related form of dementia can enjoy structured programs geared to encourage socialization, and a general feeling of well being. A highly trained staff works as a team with community volunteers and specialists to provide participants with a wide range of activities.
    They welcome volunteers to provide a helping hand as they offer activities such as: holiday celebrations, reminiscing, music, exercise, arts and crafts, social dancing, intergenerational activities, sports activities, outings, current events, horticulture, and use of swimming pools.

  • UJA FEDERATION CENTER FOR OLDER ADULTS
    Housed in the Jewish Center of Teaneck, the COA provides a warm and caring environment for seniors age 60+.  It offers many opportunities to socialize, participate in discussion groups, play games, and experience the joys of the Jewish holidays.  Volunteers are welcome to lead classes in arts & crafts, dance, writing, etc.  If you have a particular talent or would like to be a trip leader please call the COA.

    The Helen Sanders Thrift Shop was named for Helen Sanders, a long-time volunteer and president emeritus of the Daughters of Miriam Auxiliary. Twenty plus years ago, Mrs. Sanders held a flea market to raise funds for the Daughters of Miriam Center. That first flea market raised $1,500 and grew each year netting $15,000 annually for the Center. A fund-raising campaign, spearheaded by the late Adele Rebell, raised the money to create the thrift shop.

  • BERGEN COUNTY Y, A JCC  The Project Open Hearts, Open Homes provides respite and comfort to Israeli teens victimized by terrorism.  The summer program promotes friendships between Israeli and American teens and provides an informal support group for Israeli teens who have experienced a loss at the hands of terrorists.  You can sponsor an Israeli child’s summer experience, house an Israeli teen in your home, or volunteer your time and resources.

  • BERGEN READS
    In just one hour per week, you can improve the reading skills of a local public elementary school child.  As a Reading Buddy, you will work one-on-one with a child to bring his or her reading comprehension up to grade level and serve as a mentor, advocate and friend. Program takes place October – May during regular school hours.  Training is provided: no experience necessary

  • CHILDREN’S COURT CARE CENTER (CCCC)
    provides day care within the Bergen County Court House for children whose parents are involved in court proceedings. Volunteers oversee play with children in a beautifully equipped playroom.

  • COURT APPOINTED SPECIAL ADVOCATE (CASA)
    CASA recruits, screens, trains and supervises volunteers appointed by a family court judge to advocate on behalf of individual children who are in “out of home” placements.  Volunteers act as eyes and ears for the family court judges.  No prior experience necessary – training provided.

  • HOME INSTRUCTION FOR PARENTS OF PRESCHOOL YOUNGSTERS (HIPPY)
    provides a head start for children by training parents to be their children’s first teachers.  Volunteers assist in running a monthly workshop that brings parents and children ages 3-5 together.  Workshops vary and may include subjects such as parenting skills, how to develop a love of literature, how to read to a child, learning positive discipline strategies, what to do on a rainy day, etc.

  • YCS HOLLEY CENTER
    The Youth Consultation Service Holley Center in Hackensack, serves as a temporary residence for children who cannot live at home and need the services of a residential treatment facility.  YCS Holley provides a safe, therapeutic environment where each child's developmental needs are met, opportunities for growth are promoted and plans to transition the child to the least restrictive setting possible are maintained.
    Volunteers, at least 21 years old are needed to be one-on-one mentors.
